Along with hand washing, keeping surfaces clean is a key in helping to defeat COVID-19.
We still don’t know for certain how long COVID-19 can last on surfaces, but it seems to act like a lot of other viruses.
Studies show that the virus can last from a few hours to a few days, depending on the type of surface.
One study found that COVID-19 was still detectable on copper for up to four hours, on cardboard for up to 24 hours, and on plastic and steel for up to 72 hours.
While the idea of the virus living on your kitchen bench or mobile phone may be alarming, it’s important to remember that cleaning thoroughly with disinfectant will eliminate any risk.
Just take a clean cloth, or a wipe, and use a household cleaning product to wipe down commonly touched surfaces thoroughly and regularly. If you use a reusable cloth, make sure you put it straight in the wash.
